A specialty of dentistry that studies the supporting
structures of the teeth as well as diseases and conditions affecting them will
be examined. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium which
includes gingival (gums), alveolar bone, cementum and periodontal ligament. Periodontology
also involves the placement, maintenance and repair of dental implant including
the treatment of peri-implantitis which is thought to be similar to periodontal
diseases. Symptoms include gums that bleed easily, red swollen tender gums,
persistent bad breath.
Relevance
of Periodontology
Dentistry has been reconstructed as an
evidence-based discipline and periodontics has been in the forefront of this
transformation. Periodontal medicine, regenerative therapy, periodontal plastic
surgeries and dental implant surgery are now the main pillars of modern
periodontics. In addition, periodontists are now proficient in the treatment of
temporomandibular disorder.
